APPLIED STATISTICS (SQQS2013)
GROUP PROJECT (20%)

INSTRUCTIONS

1.                   The members for each group must be at least 3 members and not exceed 5 members.

2.                   The report must be consists of:
a)      Cover sheet with:
i.               Color: LIGHT PURPLE A4 PAPER.
ii.             Information:
-          Course group (A, B, … or K).
-          Matric number in ascending (smallest to largest) followed by the name of group members.
-          Lecturer’s name.
-          Date of submission.
b)      Table of Contents.
c)      Answer sheet:
-          Answer all questions.
-          Use SPSS to analyze the data.
-          Report must be in handwriting EXCEPT the SPSS output. Refer the example in appendix.
-          Please enclose the appropriate and useful SPSS’s output for each question.
d)      References –list at least TWO reference books.
e)      Binding: tape or ring WITHOUT plastic cover.

3.            Answer ALL questions based on YOUR OWN DATA SET collected using the given questionaire.

QUESTION (50 MARKS)

You want to study the Malaysian undergraduate students’ income and expenses. Using the given questionnaire in APPENDIX A, collect at least 100 data. Key in your collected data in SPSS, thus analyze it and answer the following question.


a)      Tabulate your data.
(4 marks)

b)      Construct 3 different diagrams, to show the distribution of your respondent based on their gender, races, and whether they have any extra income or not.
(6 marks)

c)      Find the 99% confidence interval for the mean of monthly family income. Interpret your answer.
(3 marks)

d)      Do hypothesis testing to test whether the mean of monthly family income is greater than RM 2000 at 5% level of significance.
(5 marks)

e)      Based on suitable descriptive analysis, which races appear to have the highest mean family income? Test at 5% significant level whether we can conclude that the mean family incomes are different among races.
(7 marks)

f)       Is there any evidence to conclude that students who receive allowance from family, come from family with higher mean monthly income compared to students who don’t receive any allowance from family? Use α = 0.02.
(5 marks)

g)      Can we conclude that the number of students who do part-time job, receive allowance from family and having both part-time job and allowances from family are equally distributed at 5% significant level?
                  (5 marks)

h)      Do types of expenditure category related to either they have an extra income or not? Use α = 0.05.
(5 marks)

i)        Do number of students in all types of expenditure equally distributed based on their gender? Use α = 0.01.
 (5 marks)

j)        Based on 4 expenditure categories, is there any difference on the mean percentage of total income that the student spend most of their money on? Use α = 0.02
